The interior of the bangle is composed entirely of clay. Strings of threaded beads were pressed into the clay, securing them to the surface. Diameter of bangle is 6.5". The piece stands at a 10" height with stand.

This beaded bangle was made by the Tikar, a blanket term for several related ethnic groups in Cameroon. Originally from Sudan, the Tikar migrated to and ruled Cameroon until the early 19th century. During the peak of their reign, the Tikar were famous for their arts - beading, iron work, and sculpture in particular. In West Africa, beads have historically been used to show status and were believed to have protective properties. In addition to jewelry, Tikar bangles served as a form of currency, sometimes used to pay a dowry.
