Provenance

This piece was created and hand-dyed in western India. The orchid hue comes from lac, a scarlet resin harvested from indigenous Indian trees and plants. Since ancient times, lac has been used in India as a wood finish, for makeup, and as a natural dye for wool and silk. The name lac originates from the Sanskrit word laksha, which refers to a deep red dye. Lac can express a range of colors, from crimsons to burgundies to deep purples. The ombre shades of this piece are created by deftly tying the linen and varying the dye concentration and number of dips.
