Provenance

This style of embroidery is created by the women of the Mexican Southwestern state of Oaxaca and traditionally used to decorate blouses. The tip of the agave leaf, native to the region, was originally used as a needle; in modern times, this was replaced with a metal needle. The textile is used as a blank canvas for women to fill with patterns and inspirations. These motifs typically depict scenes from daily life, dreams and aspirations, or simply the wild flora and fauna of Oaxaca.
