Provenance

This piece is made in a small town in western Colombia called Curiti, or “town of weavers” in the Guane language, where the craft is passed down from generation to generation. The weavers begin by harvesting the leaves of the fique plant, a native succulent plant that is similar to an agave, which are then peeled and boiled to soften the material. Then, the individual fibers are meticulously separated into threads and dyed. Traditionally, due to its strength, fique fiber was woven into bags to store and transport coffee and cacao but is now recognized for its beauty in the home.
